Understanding The Health Benefits Of Organic Food

If you are one of those people who think that the health benefits of organic food are overrated, think again. According to recent studies, organic food actually contains more antioxidants compared to those that are produced with the use of pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals. Plants have natural defenses against infestations in the form of phenolic compounds. A good example of phenolic compounds is the flavonoids which are known to be antioxidants that prevent some forms of cancers. Phenolic compounds such as flovonoids are produced by plants when it tries to fight back against infestations such aphids and other forms of insects.

The organic farming practice of not using pesticides to get rid of the plant infestations therefore allows the plants to produce more phenolic compounds to ward off insects and other organisms. In other words, organic food contains higher degree of antioxidants compared to those products that have been produced with the t use of pesticides and other chemicals. This means that if a person eats only organically grown fruits and vegetables, his or her chances of getting some forms of cancers is greatly reduced.

Avoiding The Health Hazards Of Chemical Toxins

Aside from having more antioxidants compared to the conventionally grown food, organic food does not contain harmful toxins. Studies show that harmful toxins in the environment could cause different types of diseases in people. Although there are many experts who dismiss the harmful effects of chemical toxins in conventionally grown food, it cannot be denied that spraying pesticides and herbicides on plants could affect its fruits. According to studies, most conventional fruits and vegetable growers have been spraying their farms with chemicals for a long time that the residue of these chemical sprays may have sipped into the soil and alter its composition. The accumulated toxins in the soil and the environment could affect the quality of its produce. Although there are still no conclusive studies as to how these chemical pollutions in the soil could change the nutritional value of the plants grown in it, one cannot really be certain that these changes in the nutritional value of the food is not harmful to human beings.

Switching To Organic Food

People who want to lead a healthy life should switch to organic food. Although organic food may be a little bit more expensive compared to those conventionally produced food, the healthy benefits of these organic foods is well worth the few extra dollars that we spend on them. Besides, if you take into consideration the many benefits that one could get out of organic food, the difference in prices would appear to be insignificant.
